LOS ANGELES, CA (April 27, 2021) - Voltage Pictures has secured worldwide rights to the newly announced feature film American Boogeyman based on the untold story of notorious serial killer Ted Bundy as he’s pursued by an intrepid detective and the rookie FBI profiler who coined the term “serial killer.”  Currently in post-production, the film, written and directed by Daniel Farrands (The Haunting of Sharon Tate, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers) stars Chad Michael Murray, known for his roles in Warner Bros.’ House Of Wax, Lionsgate’s The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia, and the CW’s popular “Riverdale,” it was announced today by Voltage Pictures’ President and COO Jonathan Deckter.

Murray, who stars as the charismatic murderer Ted Bundy, is joined by legnedary genre actress Lin Shaye (“Elise Rainier” from the Insidious franchise, Sony Picture Entertainment’s The Grudge,  Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful:  City of Angels”) and Holland Roden (Sony’s upcoming Escape Room 2, MTV's “Teen Wolf”).

Fathom Events will release American Boogeyman theatrically across the U.S. on August 16, 2021. Voltage and Dark Star Pictures will handle the downstream rights.

Set in a gritty and decadent 1970s America, American Boogeyman follows the elusive and charming killer and the ensuing manhunt that brought Ted Bundy, American’s most feared boogieman, to justice.

Producers of American Boogeyman are Lucas Jarach (The Haunting of Sharon Tate, The Amityville Murders), Daniel Davila (Dead Mine, Knife Fight) and Farrands (The Haunting In Connecticut).  Alan Pao (The November Man) and Luke Daniels (Under the Silver Lake, No Man’s Land) serve as Executive Producers.

Lucas Jarach negotiated the distribution deal on behalf of the producers with Jonathan Deckter on behalf of Voltage Pictures.

“Ted Bundy is such a fascinatedly divisive character and is the true personification of evil,” commented Deckter.  “Murray is so talented and expertly captures Bundy’s charm and seductive nature, traits that the notorious killer exploited to win the trust of his victims as well as society.  It’s fantastic to continue working with the very gifted Lucas and Dan on this feature and bring engaging narratives to the screen.”

Actor Chad Michael Murray has been bringing his brooding good looks and acting talent to film screens and television sets for two decades.  He appeared Warner Bros.’ House Of Wax, Lionsgate’s The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia and was also featured in Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas.  On TV, he is known for his role as Edgar Evernever on the CW’s popular and long-running series “Riverdale.” He starred in the CW’s “One Tree Hill” as the good son, Lucas Scott.  Additional TV credits include “Dawson’s Creek” and “Gilmore Girls.”

Accomplished writer, producer, and director Daniel Farrands, who specializes in the horror genre, made his breakthrough in the industry writing the screenplay for Miramax’s Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers starring Paul Rudd. His additional credits include Blumhouse’s Amityville: The Awakening, The Amityville Murders, Saban Films’ The Haunting of Sharon Tate starring Hilary Duff and Jonathan Bennett and The Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson with Mena Suvari. Farrands was also a producer on the incredibly successful horror film The Haunting In Connecticut starring Kyle Gallner, Virginia Madsen and Martin Donovan.

Fathom has also secured U.S. theatrical distribution rights to Voltage Pictures’ recently announced ‘Monster Prequel’ American Boogeywoman also directed by Farrands and starring “Cobra Kai’s” Peyton List who is joined by horror icon Tobin Bell (“Jigsaw” from the Saw franchise, Manson Family Vacation), Lydia Hearst (The Haunting of Sharon Tate), Nick Vallelonga (Universal’s Green Book), Swen Temmel (Twentieth Century Fox’s In Time, Lionsgate’s Backtrace), Meadow Williams (STX’s Den of Thieves, New Line Cinema’s The Mask), and Andrew Biernat (Shadow’s Edge).  Based on the early life of one of America’s most notorious female serial killers, Aileen Wuornos who’s downfall was chronicled in the Oscar winning movie Monster, Fathom will release the ‘sister’ film theatrically on September 20, 2021 in select U.S. theaters nationwide. Voltage and Dark Star Pictures will handle the downstream rights.

“We are excited to be partnering with Voltage Pictures to bring their compelling stories to audiences across the country,” said Ray Nutt CEO Fathom Events. “True crime aficionados will want to see these films.”
