Friends Fans Nationwide Unite to Celebrate the Hit Comedy’s 25th Anniversary, Turning the Three-Night Cinema Event into a Box-Office Smash
The First-Ever Theatrical Screenings of Warner Bros.’ Iconic Friends Episodes Breaks Fathom Events and Event Cinema Records
DENVER – October 3, 2019 – In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the legendary television comedy Friends, fans paid tribute to their longtime BFFs by viewing producer-picked episodes of the hit sitcom in movie theaters across the U.S. over three nights: September 23, September 28 and October 2. The Fathom Events and Warner Bros. presentation of “Friends 25th: The One With The Anniversary” attracted more than 230,000 fans to movie theaters nationwide and grossed an estimated $2.9M across all three dates, making it second highest-grossing U.S. event cinema release of 2019.
The event, which landed in the box office top 10 on each screening day, brought together 12 fan-favorite episodes of Friends, each night featuring four unique episodes that were newly remastered in 4K from the original 35mm camera negative. Each night’s walk-in program also included de-archived Friends interview footage, shot by Extra during the first week of production on the Friends set.
“Friends 25th: The One With The Anniversary” was presented in more than 1,600 movie theaters, making it Fathom Events’ largest theatrical footprint ever. With this event, Fathom Events continues a record-breaking year that has featured several top-grossing events from Warner Bros., including Peter Jackson’s “They Shall Not Grow Old” – which holds the record as the highest-grossing North American event cinema release – and the top two classic film events, “The Wizard of Oz” and “Gone With the Wind.” Fathom’s year also featured another notable classic television event, “I Love Lucy: A Colorized Celebration,” which broke into the top 10 at the box office on August 6.
“The extraordinary performance of our Friends screenings proves that there is a desire from fans to experience their most beloved television programming on the big screen,” said Fathom Events CEO Ray Nutt. “Fathom Events is committed to offering acclaimed content for our audiences, including television shows like this that have a long-lasting impact on popular culture.”
